El Calafate awaits you!

Leave your bags safe in El Calafate and make the most of your trip 😎

The land of glaciers presents, in addition to the charm and majesty of the most beautiful and impressive blocks of ice in the world, a city full of life and surprises.

This town is an access area to a multitude of ice mountains that make up Los Glaciares National Park, and that make it a privileged site in Argentina and the world. So much so that in 1981 UNESCO declared this entire Park "World Heritage".

From El Calafate to the Perito Moreno Glacier, there is a distance of 80 km in which the Patagonian steppe is crossed, passing later to the entrance of the National Park, where the Magellanic forest can be observed.

The Perito Moreno is one of the many glaciers that form the Los Glaciares National Park. They all form the Patagonian Continental Ice (17,000 kilometers long). This mass of ice moves and attracts countless tourists with its movements, its detachments and the dynamics of its unexpected and captivating breaks.

Unmissable places of El Calafate

The places you really can't miss on your visit 🚶🏼‍♂️🚶🏼‍♀️

  • Walichu Caves: an archaeological site 7 km from the downtown area that shows the footprints of the first men who walked these lands and where the first Paleolithic cave paintings in the province were discovered.
  • Perito Moreno Glacier: Perito Moreno is an active glacier. It is one of the few in the world and the only one in Patagonia that advances. This advance, of approximately 100 meters per year, generates another phenomenon of breathtaking beauty: the break, without a doubt, one of the most impressive natural phenomena that has been seen in recent times.
  • Los Glaciares National Park: made up of thirteen glaciers and diverse environments of the Subantarctic Forest and the Patagonian Steppe. Among the glaciers of the place are the Upsala (the largest of all), the Spegazzini and the Perito Moreno. Guarding the whiteness of the Perito Moreno rise the Onelli, Bertrand, El Chaltén, Fitz Roy and Torre hills, visited by climbers from all over the world.
  • Routes: you can explore the area on foot, by car or by boat. Be sure to visit the Redonda Bay, the Argentino Lake and the Solitaria Island. The Roca Lake, which surprises with the presence of eagles, caracaras and condors and enjoy a walk around the Desert Lake.
  • Ice Festival: with ice skating and hockey, a torchlight parade, sledges, sculptures, Chueca games (a very popular sport characteristic of the area), with the possibility that anyone can skating down the rink.
  • Argentino Lake: is the largest in the Argentine Republic and the third in South America. Navigating the lake, the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers and Onelli Bay can be seen. The navigation is carried out between great icebergs of incredible colors, in excursions that depart from Punta Bandera.
  • Patagonia Ice Museum (Glaciarium): The tour begins guided by the pleasant sound of dripping meltwater. With panels that describe the formation of ice, the history of explorers and scientists, a large model that presents the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the origin of glaciers, interactive screens that allow viewing, for example, the retreat of the Upsala glacier and much more. .
  • Roca Lake: an ideal place to enjoy the typical Patagonian steppe landscape in contrast to the forests of ñires and lengas. You can go for walks, bike rides, bird watching (mainly aquatic), horseback riding and more.
  • Calafate Mountain Park: you can take the Balcón chairlift, 4X4 activities, Bike Park and the Upsala Kayak Experience excursion. Learn to ski, practice Moto Snow fire and walk with snowshoes. From the hill you can see beautiful views of Argentino Lake and the Andes mountain range in an incredible setting.
